MARGARET M. STEWART

MARGARET M. STEWART, so affectionately known to all as “Maree” was born to the late William Matthews, Jr. and Margaret Pitts on March 6, 1941. Maree fought a battle of many illnesses for many years and God saw fit for her to come home and rest with him at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, January 27, 2014.

Maree was educated in the Accomack County Public Schools. She accepted Christ in her life and became a member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church in Onancock, VA. Maree joined Charlie “Sonny” Stewart in marriage in 1970 and from that marriage came one daughter and four sons.

Maree was a lover of life, her family, friends and the community. There was nothing Maree loved more than her children. She also loved sharing interesting conversation with family and friends and her scanner. Maree loved her work because that involved children. She was employed as a Domestic Housekeeper for Bill and Claudia Bagwell as well as Ann Bagwell. With the Bagwells, Maree raised Anna and Thomas as her own. Other enjoyments in life were cooking to make sure the neighborhood kids had something to eat, sewing and listening to her gospel music. Maree’s favorite songs were “Rough Side of the Mountain” and “Ride Out Your Storm.” Margaret welcomed almost anyone into her home for good conversations and plenty of laughs. She will surely be missed by everyone in and outside the community.

Maree was preceded in death by her parents, William Matthews, Jr. and Margaret Pitts, her son Donald C. Matthews, a granddaughter Nicole Matthews, and three sisters Stella Smith, Ernestine Pitts and Shirley Ann Strand and a brother Ronnie Matthews. Margaret leaves to continue her legacy: three sons, Noah Matthews (Debbie), Victor Matthews (Brenda) and Clinton Matthews and one devoted daughter Renee. She leaves her grandchildren: Antonio, Brittany, Victor, Jr. Drashawn, Kiara and Keimya, six great-grandchildren, one brother, Lilton Pitts, Sr. (Eva), a sister, Joyce (Russell) Garrison; In-laws: Peggy (Clyde) Bassett, Elsie Hibbler, Shirley Stewart, Bessie (Freddie) Parker and Jerry (Nannie) Stewart; a very special nephew whom she loved dearly, Douglas (Janelle) Bundick along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other adopted family members including two very special young ladies: Shadreita Stewart and Lisa Ashby.
