DR. SARAH E. ANDERSON

Dr. Sarah E. Anderson, 93, peacefully passed away on October 31, 2021 in Wilmington, Delaware surrounded by her loving sister. She was born on June 19, 1928 in Accomac, Virginia to the late Rev. Robert Lee Edwards and Mrs. Helen Wise Edwards.

Sarah grew up in Savageville, Virginia and at a young age was active in her church, Gaskins Chapel AME Church. She was educated in the Accomack County Public School System and graduated from Mary N. Smith. Sarah attended Elizabeth City State University and graduated receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education. She started her career as a teacher within the Accomack County Public School System. It was during these early days of her teaching career that she found her love and passion for being an educator.

Upon marrying the late Claude W. Anderson, Sarah relocated to Philadelphia, PA. She continued her teaching career within the Philadelphia Public School System where she was an elementary school teacher at various schools. Her teaching career in Philadelphia would span 49 years. She also welcomed the birth of her only child, Robert W. Anderson (Bobby) in July of 1961. Sarah also had a love for learning and continued her own education earning a Masters of Education from Villanova University and later a Doctor of Education (EdD) from University of Pennsylvania in June 1984.

Sarah is survived by her son, Bobby; two brothers Robert Edwards of Portsmouth, VA and Alfred (Antha) Edwards of Aberdeen, MD; and her sister, JoAnn E. Wise of Wilmington, DE who was her caregiver since 2018; nephews, Gregory, Alfred, Dwayne, Mark, Clifton, Carby and Zachary; nieces, Denise, April, Karen, and Carla; a host of great-nephews, great-nieces, cousins, and friends.

Sarah enjoyed travelling, hosting gatherings at her home, spending time in Atlantic City, N.J. and more recently playing (and winning) dominoes. She will be missed for her boisterous laughter, love of family, but most of all for her true desire to spark the creativity and learning in all the children that she met. Over many decades, she truly touched and shaped the lives of so many children.
