HERMAN PETTIT

HERMAN MCGILBERT PETTIT, 92, ended his earthly journey, answered the Master’s call and departed this life peacefullyat home in Parksley, Virginia on July 10, 2016 surrounded by loving family. Born on March 21, 1924 in Accomac, Virginia he was the beloved son of the late James and Estella Snead Pettit.Herman was educated in the public schools of Accomack County. He was a graduate of Mary N. Smith High School and attended Virginia State University. Always a hard worker, Herman helped with the family farm business and was employed by C & P Telephone Company in Onancock, Virginia before relocating to Queens, New York. Employed as a meter reader for Con Edison Electric Company, he maintained a love for country living and returned to the Eastern Shore upon his retirement.

Herman was a steadfast, dedicated supporter of his church and church family. He took his Christian life seriously, striving to live a life pleasing to God. At his home church, Metropolitan United Methodist, he served as trustee, United Methodist Men President, Sunday School teacher and Superintendent. A faithful member, it was only on the rarest of Sundays that he was not in attendance. He remained faithful to the ministries of the church especially the nursing home visitations.

Herman loved gospel music, especially the old traditional hymns. He enjoyed jazz, traveling and gardening. He took great pride in growing flowers and keeping a neat, manicured yard. Most of all, Herman was a people person who delighted in spending time with family. He was a great conversationalist, an excellent storytellerand enjoyed a good joke. He loved baseball and was an ardent supporter and season ticket holder for his beloved New York Mets. He was never fond of watching television…unless the baseball game was on.

Herman had a heart for helping others and could always be counted on to offer a word of encouragement and lend a helping hand. Providing sound council, offering wisdom, showing kindness and concern came naturally to him. He was a loving father, brother, son, uncle and friend and will be missed.

Cherished memories are left with his five children: Sandra Garrick of Columbia, SC; Wayne (Alphine) Pettit and Kelvin (Carolyn) Pettit of Parksley, Virginia; Sharone (Frederick) Grant, Snow Hill, MD and Michael Pettit of Chantilly, VA.; two sisters: Ida Hatton, Parksley, Virginia and Mercier Harris (John), Glassboro, New Jersey; a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and a large extended family with a host of special nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one brother, James (“Son”) Pettit, Jr.; five sisters: Theresa EmilyNedab Jones, Janet Wynn, Eula Mitchell, Marceline Roderick and Annie Holden; one son, Robert Pettit and onegrandson, Breon Fitzhugh. .
