SARAH AMES

SARAH ANN BAILEY AMES, beloved daughter of the late Otha and Sally Bailey was born September 22, 1923 in Onancock, VA on Boundary Avenue. She departed this life on Saturday, January 7, 2018 at her home in Onancock Square Apartments.

Sarah Ann received her early education in the Accomack County Public Schools then attended St. Lawrence College where she received her degree in Cosmetology. On May 30, 1964 she married the late Willard Ames.

She worked as a Teachers Aide for 34 years and loved children and music. Sarah Ann sang on many choirs at Bethel AME Church where she got her religion at a very early age. She loved working in the schools and singing with her church family. She also enjoyed cooking and laughing with family and friends. Her family and friends called her “Bird” because she was so tiny.

She leaves to mourn her only child, Janice Hall (Devery), adopted daughters, Wanda Morgan and Helen B. Chandler; her grandchildren, Rajett Hall (Trivon), Ryan Hall (Emania) and Richarda Snead (Devonte); great-grandchildren, Janirah and Ijanay Jones, Amiraya Washington and Ryianna Hall; two sisters, Constance Chandler and Cleo Cartwright, a dear friend, Milton Strand; and two sisters-in-laws, Doretha Ashby and Frances Washington and a host of other relatives and friends. Praise God, Sarah Ann was not sick. God gently slipped in and took her home from labor to reward.
